Using stereotypes to create meaning for audiences

Theresa May is being depicted as weak, with her being constantly ridiculed for being a 'farce'. Her persistent connection with 'u-turning' allows for her to be shown as lacking commitment and belief in herself and her party, hence allowing for left wing newspapers to make the Labour party appear dominant over the Conservatives. In the first cover, the connection with her being a weak and fragile woman is evident as she is depicted as a movie character who is renowned for being saved by men who are a lot stronger. The second cover is clearly demonstrating that May is selfish, a trait which is now welcome amongst those in power such as prime ministers. The left wing newspaper, the Daily Mirror has chosen to present May in this way as it shows her to the public as being an unworthy leader of the country. The use of the concrete noun 'lady' indicates that she is less dominant than her male counterparts, perhaps in particular the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
