Dance music video conventions


Mise en scene- The setting for this video is at a large, picturesque mansion, suggesting that the artist is used to the higher life lifestyle. The expensive car emphasises the view of the artist being wealthy, hence making him more desirable to the audience. The presence of a vast amount of the artists 'friends' gives the impression of him being likeable and emphasising that him and his music are something to be enjoyed and partied to by the audience. The attire of the artist and his friends emphasises to the audience that they are wealthy and desirable. Male gaze is evident in this music video as the girls in the video are wearing pool wear, with sexualised dancing also being prominent in the video.  The numerous shots of the Rolls-Royce emphasises the wealth of the artist, in order for his lifestyle and his music to appear desirable. The images of the pool indicates the wealth of the artist whilst also suggesting the wearing of swimwear in the video. The combination of high end clothes, an expensive car and a large mansion, aids to give the impression of the artist having a desirable lifestyle and that his music is ideal for people who have similar lifestyles to himself. The facial expressions of the people in the video demonstrate them having a good time and in a party mood, suggesting to the audience that this is the type of music which they can dance to.
Editing- There is a clear continuity in the editing for this video, with the events happening in chronological order, and the use of fast paced editing with shots that are in the same area and time as the others. Different shots of different people are used to give the impression that they are all dancing simultaneously to the music. At the start of the video editing is used to display the name of the artist and the song.

Sound- Non-diegetic sound is used frequently throughout this video as the music play continuously with the actors dancing to it. There are no other forms of sound in this video as there is a lack of dialogue or ambient noises.

Camerawork- Close ups are used persistently in this video, either on the scenery or props or on the actors. Close ups on the scenery and props are used to exaggerate the wealth of the artist and to make his lifestyle appear desirable. Close ups are used on the actors to show their facial expressions which indicate they are clearly enjoying the music. Wide angle shots are used to emphasise the amount of people at the party, suggesting that the music causes a lot of people to dance.

Narrative conventions- The narrative of this video is that it is a party at an expensive mansion. This is a common narrative in dance music videos.

Representation of gender- Both genders were minimal clothing therefore they are both represented as appealing.




Mise en scene- There is no constant setting in this music video, with numerous settings being used to emphasise the many places that are being travelled to. The exotic locations are indicative of the song, as it is based on the actor travelling and discovering the world. The attire of the actors suggests their minimal wealth but emphasises their decision to prioritise living a memorable life ahead of materialistic objects. The props used also emphasise the decision to ignore materialist objects in order to live a better life. There is no evidence of male gaze in this video as the attire of the actors does not portray either gender in such a way.

Editing- Fast paced editing is used in this music video in order to demonstrate the actor travelling to vast amounts of places and participating in loads of activities. This emphasises the message within the song of encouraging the audience to go out and live the best possible life. The speed of the editing matches the speed of the song, with it being fairly slow at the start but then speeding up dramatically.

Sound- At the start non-diegetic sound is used in the form of a voiceover as the actor introduces the meaning of the song. Non-diegetic sound is used throughout in the form of the music that accompanies the video.

Camerawork- In this video there is a variety of different camera angles and styles used to give the impression of it being fast paced and energetic. The use of hand held camera gives the impression of the audience being alongside the actor in the video, suggesting that they can take part in the wild activities that the actor is participating in in the video. The use of wide shots allow for the audience to understand and admire the scenery that is present in the video, allowing for it to appear desirable to the audience. High angle are employed to emphasise the danger in the activities that the actor is participating in, suggesting to the audience that this desirable lifestyle would cause you to feel a great deal of adrenaline and fear.
Narrative convention-There is no clear narrative in this video but there is an underlying message to the audience insisting that they 'live a life they will remember'

Representation of gender- The male in this video is shown to be brave and adventurous as he travels around the world and participates in dangerous activities. This gives the impression of him being very masculine




Mise en scene- A number of different settings are used in this video to give the impression of music coming from different areas at the same time. The man on the piano in a dark room combined with the dancers in an old fashioned hall give the impression of the music coming from a traditional background, whilst the shots of the DJ in the arena show the audience that the music has been adapted to suit modern audiences. The costumes of the actors in the video are appropriate to their location.

Editing- Cross cutting is frequent in this video as the audience is transported to different locations in which the music is present. Fast paced editing is also uses to emphasise the rhythm and tempo of the music.

Sound- Non diegetic sound is constant throughout this video as the music accompanies the dancing and singing in the video. Diegetic sound such as clicking is also present in this video to match the actions of the actors.

Camerawork- A combination of close ups and wide angle shots are used in this video to either concentrate solely on the actions of one of the actors or to demonstrate to the reader that more than one person is dancing along to the music. Moving shots are used to give the impressions of the audience moving along with the music.

Narrative conventions- There is no narrative whatsoever in this video but there is a link between the music and its origins

Representation of gender- The woman in this video is represented as independent and controlling, suggesting that she has power.
